        City of Burlington, WI

Burlington is a city in Racine and Walworth counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, with the majority of the city located in Racine County. The population of the city was 11,047 as of the 2020 census.
        History of Burlington
        First Land Claim
Burlington was located at the junction of the White River and Fox River in southeastern Wisconsin. The first land claim was made around December of 1835, when Moses Smith and William Whiting carved their names and date on trees near the present Standard-Press building on Pine Street. Returning with Lemuel Smith and Benjamin Perce weeks later, the four built a shanty on the east side of the Fox River in what is now Wehmhoff-Jucker Park.
        Early Settlement
In 1836 Daniel Rork made a claim to land on which much of the early settlement was built. In 1837 Moses Smith was appointed postmaster of the settlement, then called Foxville. The name was changed to Burlington on July 15, 1839. After completion of the dam, sawmill and grain mill, the first bridge to span the Fox River was built. Since then the population has grown from two, to four, to today over 10,800 people.

        • We Are Family
Three Generations on hand from Branch to Bottle.

Cider and Perry? We use the pre-Prohibition meaning of ‘cider’, so we’re talking about fermented or ‘hard’ cider. Perry is the pear analogue to cider. We use lots of different kinds of apples and pears in our products. Some modern. Some heirloom – no longer grown for stores. We make a range of styles: sparkling, draft, still/table, and fortified/dessert. Within a style, we lean to the dry end – but also have some medium-sweet offerings.

We are also a distillery. We use Wisconsin grown crops and wood to make whiskey and brandies. Distilled spirits may be powerful, but they are also flexible. They are nice neat (straight up), and even more fun in cocktails. We encourage people to mix our products up and add their own creative touch.

        Malt House Theatre

        109 N Main St, Burlington, WI 53105
        About Us
The Haylofters has its home in the historic Malt House Theatre. The building was built in the 1800’s as the
Jacob Muth Brewery, and later housed the Finke-Uhen Malt House.
The group was founded in 1932 by Elmer Ebert and Catherine and Cyril Hammiller, and its first home was
the old Newell barn near downtown Burlington, on the southeast corner of State and Pine Streets, where
the Burlington Post Office now sits. Shows were presented for audiences on a small stage built into the
hayloft – hence our group’s name. The members would go wherever there was an available stage to
present one-act plays. The original site was razed in 1951.
After the Malt House was purchased during World War II (for $859 in back taxes), the group spent a number of years renovating it into a theater. The first production on the new stage was Angel Street in 1954.
Since that time, the company has presented an annual season, usually including spring and fall plays and a summer musical. In recent years, the Young Haylofters have performed a summer play under the direction of student directors under the guidance of experienced adult group members.
The Haylofters also offer off-season activities and shows. Recent events include a UW-Madison Mad Hatters A Cappella concert, an evening with Milwaukee humorist John McGivern, and participation in Burlington’s fall season Haunted Bus event.
The Malt House is a charming, historic, climate-controlled 96-seat theatre. New, cloth upholstered and padded seats were added in July, 2009.
